Why Is My Helium IoT Hotspot Earning Almost Nothing?

Helium IoT PoC rewards ended under HIP 149. Learn why an online hotspot may earn nothing, what Nova's operator search means, and what to consider before turning it off.

Short answer: Helium IoT Proof-of-Coverage rewards ended on July 6, 2026 as HIP 149 was implemented. An IoT hotspot no longer earns HNT simply for being online, beaconing, or witnessing. Its remaining hotspot reward path is eligible IoT data transfer. Many hotspots carry no data and therefore earn nothing; even among hotspots that do carry data, rewards are often extremely small.

The Helium IoT Network is still operating. Nova Labs is looking for a long-term operator to take responsibility for it, but as of September 2, 2026, no operator had been selected and no transfer agreement had been signed. Keeping a hotspot online may preserve useful coverage during that search, but it does not guarantee current HNT rewards or any form of payment from a future operator.

What changed on July 6?

HIP 149 retired Proof-of-Coverage reward mechanisms on both Helium Mobile and Helium IoT. Nova CTO Marc Nijdam reported during the July 7 Advisory Council town hall that the new oracles had been deployed on July 6 and that PoC rewards were no longer in effect.

For an IoT hotspot, the distinction is simple:

  • Before July 6: a hotspot could earn from PoC activity, IoT data transfer, or both.
  • After July 6: beaconing, witnessing, and being online do not create PoC rewards. Eligible IoT data transfer remains rewardable.

The retired IoT PoC allocation was redirected to the IoT operations fund, which supports regional routers, oracles, and part of the engineering work needed to keep the network running. It was not added to hotspot data rewards. IoT data transfer continues at its existing data-credit peg, and IoT hotspots do not receive the Mobile network's dollar-linked earnings target.

The network did not switch off on July 6. What ended was the reward for proving radio coverage. This is why a hotspot can appear online and healthy while earning zero HNT.

Why can an online hotspot earn nothing?

Online status means the gateway is available to receive and route compatible LoRaWAN traffic. It does not create traffic by itself. To earn a data reward, nearby devices must actually transmit packets that use the Helium IoT Network and the hotspot must participate in forwarding eligible traffic.

A hotspot may therefore earn nothing when:

  • there are no active Helium-routed IoT devices within useful radio range;
  • nearby devices transmit rarely, so packet activity is intermittent;
  • other gateways also cover the area and the hotspot does not receive eligible traffic;
  • the hotspot is shown as online but has a local radio, antenna, network, or routing problem; or
  • its former rewards came entirely from PoC, which no longer pays.

This is also why network-wide usage and individual earnings can look contradictory. The network can carry paid traffic for real customers while a particular hotspot sees no packets at all.

How small are IoT data rewards?

The clearest published HeliumGeek snapshot is the June 24 UTC reward epoch, ending June 25, 2026 at 00:00 UTC. This was before PoC ended, so it is not a count of current post-HIP 149 earners. It shows how dependent the network was on PoC and how small and concentrated IoT data rewards already were.

The average data reward was 0.0125 HNT, but that average was pulled upward by a small number of high-usage hotspots. The top 1% of data-rewarded hotspots received about 43% of all IoT data rewards, while the top 10% received about 82%. The median is more representative of a typical data-rewarded hotspot in that snapshot.

That historical distribution matters because removing PoC did not create local device demand. It removed the reward path on which many hotspots depended. A hotspot that forwards a few packets may technically be earning from data while the amount remains economically negligible.

Do not read this as a current count

The June 24 figures describe one pre-HIP 149 epoch. Gateway participation and traffic have changed since then. Use them to understand the old network's reliance on PoC and the shape of data rewards, not to claim that exactly 114,267 hotspots earn zero today.

Is the Helium IoT Network still operating?

Yes. During the September 2 Helium community call, Joey Hiller described an active network and an active search for its next operator. His same-day update reported about 147K gateways connected during the preceding 24 hours, paid traffic for major LPWAN operators, and new organizations continuing to join. He also discussed a flood-detection deployment in Mexico and work to onboard a top-50 U.S. city.

Those examples establish that the network still has real infrastructure and real use. They do not mean every connected hotspot carries traffic, that the network is financially sustainable under its current structure, or that an individual hotspot should expect meaningful earnings.

What is Nova's plan for the IoT Network?

The plan is to find a long-term operator, custodian, and growth partner whose primary responsibility is the IoT Network.

  1. August 6: The Helium Advisory Council recommended that Nova focus its resources on Mobile and Wi-Fi offload, while transitioning IoT to another capable party. Decommissioning was identified as the fallback if no viable operator emerges.
  2. August 20: Nova CEO Mario Di Dio said Nova agreed with the recommendation and had started identifying and evaluating prospects, with a goal of completing a transition before the end of 2026.
  3. September 2: Joey Hiller said several candidates were in the pipeline, but no operator had been selected and nothing had been signed.

The September call described this process as divestiture and a handoff. The contemplated outcome is not a replacement operator working inside Helium's current HNT reward system. It is the IoT network moving to another entity and no longer being part of Helium. If that handoff is completed, HNT would no longer be paid for activity on the transferred IoT network.

The new entity could use another commercial payment or incentive model, or it could operate without a hotspot reward program. Nothing has been announced about that structure. A transition is not complete until an operator is selected and an agreement is signed, and the end-of-2026 date is a goal rather than a guaranteed handoff date.

Should I keep my hotspot online?

There is no single answer for every owner. The practical decision is whether the cost and effort of keeping it online are acceptable without predictable mining income.

Reasons to keep it online

  • You operate devices that you already know use its coverage.
  • Its electricity, internet, and maintenance costs are small enough that you are comfortable operating it without predictable rewards.
  • You want to help preserve network availability while the operator search develops.

Reasons to reconsider

  • The hotspot has shown no data activity after a meaningful observation period.
  • It has material electricity, connectivity, rent, or maintenance costs.
  • You require a predictable financial return to keep operating it.
  • Keeping it online creates operational problems that outweigh its current utility.

HeliumGeek cannot identify the devices or people behind the traffic, and it cannot tell you whether another gateway would have carried the same packets. If you already know that your own deployment uses the hotspot, include that in your decision. Otherwise, base the decision on the connection, data, and reward information that is actually available, together with your operating costs.

Does keeping it online help attract a new operator?

It may help preserve the network that a potential operator is evaluating. A large base of reachable gateways can make it easier to support existing devices and demonstrate geographic coverage. Losing useful gateways during the search can reduce that value.

However, the idea that every additional online hotspot makes a handoff more likely is community reasoning, not a commitment from Nova or the Advisory Council. A prospective operator is likely to care about the quality and location of coverage, active devices and customers, paid traffic, operating costs, and the ability to support the network, not only the raw gateway count.

Keeping a hotspot online should therefore be treated as a choice to preserve potential utility, not as an investment contract or a promise of later compensation.

Will a new operator pay HNT or bring PoC back?

No. The contemplated divestiture is not a path for a new operator to change IoT economics through Helium governance. If the IoT network is transferred out of Helium, HNT would no longer be paid for its activity.

What might replace HNT rewards is unknown. A successor could introduce another form of commercial payment or incentive, or none at all. There is no announced plan for retroactive rewards, payment for uptime during the transition, or a return of PoC. Until a handoff happens, base your decision on today's rules: eligible data transfer can earn HNT; being online by itself does not.

What can I check before deciding?

  1. Check its Packet Router connection. HeliumGeek shows the latest reported connection time and whether that connection is currently considered OK.
  2. Review data and rewards separately. Daily Data Transfers show how much IoT data the hotspot carried on each day, while recent rewards show whether that activity produced HNT.
  3. Compare several complete reward epochs. A sensor may transmit infrequently, so one quiet day is not always conclusive.
  4. Check the surrounding network. Use the IoT data map, IoT rewards map, and IoT epoch statistics to see whether your area has observable activity.
  5. Calculate your own operating cost. Electricity is often small, but internet, hosting, rent, travel, and maintenance can change the answer.

These checks show whether the hotspot is connected, whether it has carried data, and whether it has earned HNT. They do not reveal who sent the data or establish how important that hotspot is to the network.

What should hotspot owners watch next?

  • the identity and operating plan of any proposed new IoT operator;
  • whether a transfer agreement is signed and what responsibilities move with it;
  • plans for gateway, LNS, roaming, and existing-customer continuity;
  • growth in paid traffic and active device deployments, not only connected gateway count;
  • whether a successor announces any gateway payment or incentive model, and what currency or commercial terms it uses; and
  • whether the connected gateway count stabilizes while the search continues.

Bottom line

The IoT Network is active, but passive coverage mining is over.

Decide based on its operating cost, the connection, data, and reward information available to you, and whether you are comfortable leaving it online without predictable rewards. Do not assume that uptime alone will earn HNT, that a handoff is guaranteed, or that a future operator will repay today's costs.
